Clemson requires an academic partner in Genoa that can provide both Architecture and Landscape Architecture students architecture programming specifically crafted to the CU syllabus, and taught in English by faculty/practitioners in Genoa. The project/coursework must flow from one semester to the next and this cannot be replicated or picked up by another supplier. The partner must have sufficient studio space to accommodate up to 20 Clemson students with individual desks; dedicated classroom space; up-to-date printers, plotters and laser cutters; and collaboration space. The provider must offer 24/7 student support. The provider must deliver one or two long (5 days minimum) field studies travel plus at least bi-weekly day trips for the Field Studies course. The provider must have student accommodations for a minimum of 20 students. Accommodations are to include normal furnishings in the bedroom; bathrooms; washer and dryers. An entire private suite must be included in the same building as all other facilities for the professor-in-residence, a CU faculty member appointed by the School of Architecture. Food and meals must be provided for the time students are living on-site in the accommodations and students must have access to use the kitchen. Clemson University has an agreement/Memorandum of Understanding signed August 19, 2010, by the President of Clemson University and the President of the Clemson Advancement Foundation, whereby the CAF will support Clemson administratively for work and administrative contracts required at the Genoa, Italy, facility. No other supplier offers such a program. For these reasons this is determined to be a sole source.

The Agency hereby provides notice that it intends to enter into a sole source contract per S.C. Code Ann. §11-35-1560 with Vendor for the following supplies, services, information technology, or construction:

Clemson University's Forestry and Environmental Conservation & Materials Science and Engineering seeks to sole source the purchase of Masuko Sangyo Co., Ltd's Super Masscolloider, Model MKZA10-15JIV.  Our research program requires the acquisition of a high-precision grinding system capable of processing biomaterials at micro and nanoscale, like cellulose, lignin and similar advanced materials. After a thorough review of available systems, the Masuko Super Masscolloider MKZA10-15JIV was determined to be the only product meeting the specific performance and engineering requirements necessary for ongoing and future experimental work.  The model MKZA10-15JIV incorporates a proprietary disk-type grinding mechanism that is patented and unavailable from other suppliers. This has been formally certified by the manufacturer’s Certificate of Exclusivity (November 11, 2025), stating it is “the only product of its kind on the market” designed specifically for nanocellulose-related applications. The Super Masscolloider’s Superfine Wet Grinding System uses a precision-controlled ceramic disk system capable of achieving particle sizes at or below the micro/nanometer scale, a capability not replicated by other grinding systems and required for our research. Other machines cannot cannot achieve the same shear force uniformity or particle size control necessary for advanced nanocellulose and biomaterials processing. The system also enables temperature-controlled operation and eliminates metal contamination, ensuring high-purity biopolymer and nanomaterial preparation, which is a critical aspect of the research being conducted in the laboratory. The Super Masscolloider line, including the MKZA10-15JIV, is available only directly from Masuko Sangyo Co., Ltd. No third-party distributors or resellers are authorized for this model.  For these reasons, this is a sole source procurement.

Clemson University’s Chemistry department seeks to sole source the purchase of a Nanalysis Corporation NMReady 60PRO benchtop NMR spectrometer.  The NMReady-60PRO benchtop NMR will be used in the AMIC Organic Chemistry Teaching Laboratories to support sophomore-level laboratory instruction. The instrument provides proton (¹H), carbon (¹³C), and fluorine (¹⁹F) NMR spectroscopy, enabling students to collect and interpret spectra essential to learning goals in structure determination, reaction monitoring, and spectroscopic analysis.  The Department of Chemistry already operates a legacy Nanalysis benchtop NMR instrument with ¹H/¹³C/¹⁹F capability. That model has been discontinued, and Nanalysis is the only vendor that offers the direct, manufacturer-recommended replacement (NMReady-60PRO) fully compatible with our existing curriculum, training materials, and data archives.  Other manufacturers do not offer a system that replicates the same capabilities, operating procedures, workflow, or data compatibility needed for seamless integration into our multi-section teaching labs.  Selecting equipment from any other manufacturer would require redevelopment of all existing NMR lab exercises and teaching materials and rewriting laboratory manuals, LabFlow content, and data interpretation guides, and would degrade current data continuity.  For these reasons, this is a sole source.
